The Line Islands are a chain of 11 atolls and coral islands in the central Pacific Ocean, south of the Hawaiian Islands. Of the 11 islands, only the Kiritimati and Tabuaeran atolls and Teraina Island have a permanent population. Eight of the islands are part of Kiribati. The remaining three—Kingman Reef, Palmyra Island and Jarvis Island—are United States territories grouped with the United States Minor Outlying Islands.
Copra, “Petfish” and seaweed are the islands’ main export products.

[Kiribati fish ]

Fish and seafood are the main source of food throughout Kiribati. The cuisine, like all Pacific island cuisines, has been influenced by many cuisines, including Chinese, Filipino, American, and British.
Coconut, taro, breadfruit, pandanus (screw pine), pumpkin, papaya and banana are widely grown in Kiribati. Imported foods such as rice, flour and sugar are also available.

Kiribati Lobster

The national drink is called toddy, a sweet and nutritious drink made from coconut sap. From this sap a sweet syrup is made which can replace sugar, and is used in many recipes.

Kiribati rice meal

Shrimp and lobster are present on all the restaurant meals. Char fish, that looks like trout is roasted or barbecued, and is accompanied by freshly grated coconut rice. Raw tuna or flying fish marinated in a curry and coconut sauce and Bonefish burger are also popular. Snapper, cooked with coconut or simply grilled, accompanied by pieces of fried breadfruit are also served in restaurants.

Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands. In 2017 Saipan’s population was 47,565. The legislative and executive branches of the Commonwealth government are located in the village of Capitol Hill on the island. But the judicial branch is located in the village of Susupe. Most publications designate Saipan as the Commonwealth’s capital.

Coconuts, papayas, and Thai hot peppers are among the fruits that grow wild, while Mango, taro root, breadfruit, and bananas are cultivated.

There are 4 local television stations in Saipan. Local music consists of Chamorro, Carolinian, Micronesian Hawaiian Reggae, and Palauan music. Asian music consists of Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Philippine music. Mainland American music consists of much of the same music that can be found on U.S. radio.

[Fanning Island ]

Tabuaeran is an atoll that is part of the Line Islands and part of Kiribati. It had a population of 2,315 in 2015. The atoll is famous for its white-sand beaches, blue-green waters, and friendly residents. It is a heaven for snorkeling, and surfing. The closest airport is Kiribati International airport. From there one has to take a boat to this atoll. Pegasus Lodges provides private air charters from Christmas Island (on a three-hour flight from Hawaii).

Copra and seaweed are produced for export. The island has no telephones, no running water, and no electricity.

The atoll has become a port of call for yachts and cruise ships sailing from Hawaii.
The Fanning Island Lodge guesthouse is rustic accommodation on the island. It has only very basic shared amenities.

YAP, a host to a friendly, hospitable people!

Yap is a wonderful tropical island. It is surrounded by lucious, green coconut trees and sandy beaches. The beaches are privately owned, and you may rent one for a low price. These beaches are exclusive and perfect for birthday parties (this from past experience) or any other parties.

Yap’s capital is Colonia, where all the teenagers go to hang out after school. During summer, you will find the place flooded with teenagers and sometimes an elderly couple going to and fro in their journey to buy canned food. There is a small “mall” called YCA (short for Yap Cooperative Association) which attracts people from all over the island, like bees are to honey.

There are ten major municpalities on Yap. In these, ten municpalities throughout the island, you may find well tended gardens as well as taro patches and clean roads throughout the island. Sometimes bikers are a common site, which would usually be teenagers who view their bikes as a way to get away from it all.

Yap is a host to a friendly, hospitable people. There will be smiles all around and the view from any high spot is breathtaking. The ocean water is just the right temperature and many children find that they like to romp with the waves of a passing motorboat. All in all, Yap is a great place for a vacation or a permanent home and you will always feel welcomed.
