Pohnpei — Nan Madol & the Sacred Island

Pohnpei is the emerald heart of the Caroline Islands — a volcanic island wrapped in rainforest, rivers, and a lagoon full of tiny islets. At its edge lies Nan Madol: a city of basalt columns built on coral reefs a thousand years ago, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A sample itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival. Fly in from Honolulu on the island-hopper; your host meets you for the transfer to a lodge above the lagoon. Evening briefing over a dinner of local reef fish — and, if you’re curious, a first taste of sakau, the island’s traditional drink.

Day 2 — Nan Madol. A morning by boat to the “Venice of the Pacific”: dozens of artificial islets walled in basalt columns, the royal tombs, and the canals that gave the city its name. This is a living sacred site, not a museum — your guide leads the etiquette. Afternoon at the Pohnpei museum for the story behind the stones.

Day 3 — Waterfalls & the rock. Swim beneath one of the island’s curtain waterfalls, hike the ridge of Sokehs Rock for the classic view over the harbor, and wander the local market before it winds down for the day.

Day 4 — Lagoon day. A boat out to the small outer islets: snorkel a reef shelf, picnic on a sandbar, and meet a family who lives there. Late afternoon back at the lodge.

Day 5 — Departure. Morning at leisure, then transfer to the airport.
