Chuuk Lagoon at first light

Beneath the calm of Chuuk Lagoon rests the ghost fleet of the Pacific War: some sixty ships and aircraft in one sheltered anchorage, sent to the bottom in two days of 1944 and now the world’s most celebrated wreck-diving destination. This is a sample journey to show what an expedition here can look like — every trip is built to order around your experience level, your dates, and the wrecks you most want to see.

A sample itinerary

Days 1–2 — Arrival & check dives. Fly Guam → Chuuk on the island-hopper and settle into a lagoon-front dive resort. Afternoon check dives on a shallow freighter to confirm buoyancy and trim.

Days 3–5 — The deep wrecks. Three days of two-dive mornings and one-dive afternoons: the Fujikawa Maru with its storied holds, the Heian Maru’s dark engine room, the Sankisan Maru’s dramatic wheelhouse, and a clear-day trip to the famous deck-gun wreck of the Kiyosumi Maru. Surface intervals over lunch on a sand spit, shaded by nothing but the horizon.

Day 6 — The shallows. A gentler morning: a fighter plane wreck in shallow, photographer-friendly water, and a long afternoon above the surface — village visit, lagoon views, and a farewell dinner.

Day 7 — Departure. Morning transfer to the airport.

What’s typically included

  • Around 12 guided boat dives with a Chuukese dive master
  • Tanks, weights, and boat fees
  • 6 nights at a lagoon-front dive resort, breakfast daily
  • Airport transfers

Good to know

  • This is serious wreck diving: an Advanced Open Water certification and a solid logbook are expected, and credentials are checked on arrival. Tell us your level when you enquire and the itinerary is adjusted accordingly.
  • Water temperatures sit near 29°C — a 3 mm suit is plenty.
  • Equipment rental and nitrox are usually available; mention what you need when you get in touch.
  • Flights to Chuuk run on the island-hopper’s twice-weekly rhythm from Guam or Honolulu — dates are built around the flight schedule.
