Abaiang, also known in the past as Charlotte Island is in the Northern Gilbert Islands, is a coral atoll of Kiribati, located in the west-central Pacific Ocean. Abaiang has a population of 5,502. A large lagoon supports a diversity of fish species, providing plentiful seafood to the local population.

Agriculture consists mainly of breadfruit, banana and papaya as well as the coconut.

There are ten primary schools on Abaiang, with a combined roll of 985 students in 2011 and 370 secondary school students in the three secondary schools.

[ Battle of Tarawa]

Tarawa atoll was occupied by the Japanese. The battle of Tarawa was the first American offensive in the critical central Pacific region. The battle was fought on 20–23 November 1943 between the United States and Japan at the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. It was one of the most violent battles in the second world war. It was a short battle of 76 hours of fight. During only 76 hours of fight the American casualties rose up to over one thousand while Japanese lost all their 4,500 soldiers except for 17 survivors.
Japanese had fortified the atoll with fourteen coastal defense guns, including four large Vickers 8-inch guns and 500 pillboxes or “stockades” built from logs and sand, many of which were reinforced with cement.

The American invasion force consisted of 17 aircraft carriers, 12 battleships, 8 heavy cruisers, 4 light cruisers, 66 destroyers, and 36 transport ships and about 35,000 troops.

There are a few hotels in Tarawa. Accommodation is good but not luxurious. Inexpensive rest houses can be found all over the island. Facilities in the rest houses are limited. Therefore the visitors are advised take with them what they need for the stay. Less than 500 tourists arrive in South Tarawa in a year.

The Gilbert Islands are a chain of sixteen atolls and coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Papua New Guinea and Hawaii. The indigenous people of the Gilberts are Micronesians. The ideal time for traveling is from October to November.

Tinian is one of the major islands in Northern Mariana. It has pristine and secluded beaches; World War II landmarks and world-class scuba diving. Most of the visitors go to Tinian for scuba diving because numerous reefs, wrecks, and caves lie under the waters surrounding the island. In Dump Cove you’ll see planes, tanks, ammunition, and Jeeps from World War II. Tinian Grotto is the most popular cavern dive. there are several other beaches that offer diverse water sports.

The prehistoric Taga stones are relics of the ancient palace built by the Chamorro Chief Taga over 3,000 years ago. The House of Taga is located on the island of Tinian.
It was believed that a mythological chief named Taga erected the pillars as a foundation for his own house. There were several such pillars but only one of which is left standing erect due to past earthquakes.

The Sand Diamond, a high-speed ferry measuring almost 50 meters in length and with the capacity to carry 290 people and more than 30 cars, will begin daily sailings between Tinian and Saipan as a means of providing better tourist access to the casino on Tinian.

Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands. In 2017 Saipan’s population was 47,565. The legislative and executive branches of the Commonwealth government are located in the village of Capitol Hill on the island. But the judicial branch is located in the village of Susupe. Most publications designate Saipan as the Commonwealth’s capital.

Coconuts, papayas, and Thai hot peppers are among the fruits that grow wild, while Mango, taro root, breadfruit, and bananas are cultivated.

There are 4 local television stations in Saipan. Local music consists of Chamorro, Carolinian, Micronesian Hawaiian Reggae, and Palauan music. Asian music consists of Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Philippine music. Mainland American music consists of much of the same music that can be found on U.S. radio.
