Angel San Nicolas kicked off 2018 with a first place finish in a Guam tournament, earning him the January Male Athlete of the Month honors given by the Northern Marianas Sports Association.
San Nicolas ruled the men’s 92kg division competition of the Micronesian Cup Championships, which was organized by the Guam Weightlifting Federation last month. He had lifts of 112 kgs (246.9 lbs) in the snatch and 142 kgs (313 lbs) in the clean & jerk for a total of 254 kgs (559.9 lbs).
San Nicolas’ lifts in Guam were a huge improvement from his bronze medal-winning lift in the 10th Pacific Mini Games that took place at the Epauto Adventist High School in Port Vila, Vanuatu last December. He improved his total lift by 3 kgs or 6.6 lbs or 2 kgs in the snatch or 4.4 lbs, and 2.2 kgs in the clean & jerk or 2.2 lbs.
His bronze in Port Vila was the CNMI’s first medal in the quadrennial sporting event organized by the Pacific Games Council since the Commonwealth claimed the baseball gold in the 2011 Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia.
San Nicolas also won a silver medal in the 2015 Micronesia Weightlifting Invitational that was hosted, too by Guam.
With his triumphs in several tournaments, San Nicolas is one of the CNMI weightlifters who are expected to compete in a qualifying event for the Commonwealth team that would participate in the 9th Micronesian Games in Yap.
The qualifier is scheduled for Feb. 17 at the Latte Built 24-Hour Fitness and Nutrition Center in San Jose.
The one-day tournament is open to athletes in the 13 years old and up age group. It will begin with the weigh-ins at 10am, while the actual competition in each weight category will start 30 minutes later.
Latte Built Gym members are free to join the qualifier, while non-members will be charged a $1 fee to enter the tournament. Registration forms are available at Latte Built or can be obtained by getting in touch with any CNMI Weightlifting Federation board member.
