US official to speak at DOL job fair

THE director of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor, Patrick Candoleta, will be the guest speaker at the CNMI DOL job fair on April 14.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the multi-purpose center.

CNMI DOL Secretary Vicky Benavente said Candoleta will address some concerns pertaining to labor issues.

Benavente said 12 companies have already confirmed their participation in the job fair which is primarily for U.S. worker applicants.

“We have invited hotels, construction firms, retail stores, manpower agencies, security agencies and child-care providers looking for employees,” Benavente said in an interview on Friday.

This will be the year’s second CNMI DOL job fair. The first was held in January for Nutrition Assistance Program recipients.

One of the companies that will participate in the job fair on April 14 is Pacific Rim, the new contractor for Imperial Pacific’s hotel-construction project.

Pacific Rim held its first job fair on Saipan in February for U.S. qualified workers. Of 60 applicants, including nonresidents, eight U.S. workers were asked to undergo a physical examination and background check.

Benavente, who was at the Pacific Rim’s job fair, commended the company for trying its best to hire U.S. qualified workers.

“They are really making every effort to hire and attract U.S. workers, but they are facing challenges because there are not enough U.S. workers applying. But we will continue reaching out, including in high schools, and we will let everyone know that another job fair will be held and there are various job positions for those interested.”
