HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — After issuing a new threat to North Korea saying American weapons were “locked and loaded,” President Donald Trump took time to reassure the people of Guam that the territory is safe.
Trump called Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo on Saturday morning and told him, “We are with you 1,000 percent.” The phone conversation was posted by Governor Calvo on his Facebook page.
Trump said he wanted to pay his respect and told the governor, “You are safe. Don’t worry about a thing. You’re gonna’ be taken care of.”
The governor thanked the president and said he has never felt “more safe” and more confident with Trump at the helm.
Trump replied, “We’ll see how it all works out and you’re not going to have a problem. Our military is so incredible…. We are rock solid and we are the best in the world.”
Reuters reports that the Pentagon said the United States and South Korea would proceed as planned with a joint military exercise in 10 days, an action sure to further antagonize North Korea. Pyongyang has accused Trump of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war and world powers have expressed alarm. Trump, who is vacationing at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf resort tweeted: “Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely. Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!” Reuters reported that Trump said if Kim utters one threat or does anything with respect to Guam or any other American territory or ally, “He (Kim) will truly regret it, and he will regret it fast.”
Trump joked that with all of the recent attention about Guam, the island’s tourism will go up ten-fold. “It looks like a beautiful place,” he said. The president said a visit to Guam “could happen.”
Governor Calvo said “as the head of the government of Guam, I appreciate [the U.S. government’s] reassurances that my family, my friends, everyone on this island, are all safe.”
