Tourist drowns at Grotto

AFTER being caught in a strong current, a 61-year-old female Chinese tourist drowned at the Grotto in Marpi on Sunday, the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services said.

According to DFEMS acting public information officer Linus Mizutani, Medic-2, Rescue 1 and Engine 2 from the Garapan Fire Station arrived at the scene at 2:20 p.m. after receiving a call from the Department of Public Safety 911 dispatch at 2:09 p.m.

Mizutani said DFEMS emergency medical technicians learned that the victim was swept under a rock near the lower steps leading down to the Grotto.

DFEMS first responders found the victim had no pulse, was not breathing and exhibited “obvious signs of lividity,” Mizutani said.

Bystanders said the victim attempted to cross the water to reach to the large rock but was hit by a wave. Due to rough waters, the victim was swept under a rock, witnesses told DFEMS.

DFEMS personnel transported the body to the Commonwealth Health Center Emergency Room where the victim was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. by Dr. Rohringer.

DFEMS identified the victim as Xhaoxia Yang.
