Texas team to conduct spay/neuter program in March

SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang said his office has signed a contract with a seven-person team from the Spay Neuter Network of Kaufman, Texas who will arrive in March.

The team consists of two veterinarians, one director and four technicians, the mayor added.

In a separate interview, special assistant to the mayor Henry Hofschneider said the animal treatment program will be held at Garapan Central Park from March 19 to 23.

He said they will charge a minimal fee of $25, adding that the network is actually charging $70 per dog or cat but the mayor’s office will subsidize $45 of the amount.

“All we’re asking are cash donations to help recover the costs,” he said, adding they will also need supplies for the animal-treatment program as well as volunteers to assist the off-island team.

Hofschneider said they will prioritize pets that are owned and registered with the Saipan mayor’s office.

“We are targeting to treat 500 dogs and cats,” he said, adding that the group is expected to conduct 100 procedures and treatments per day.

The owners of unregistered pets are encouraged to register them with the mayor’s office before they take advantage of the spay and neuter services, Hofschneider said.
