Senate confirms new Corrections chief

THE Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Department of Corrections Commissioner Vince Attao by a vote of 8 to 0.

His nomination was to be confirmed a month ago along with DLNR Secretary Anthony Benavente’s, but Attao was off island for a personal matter.

After his confirmation, Attao proceeded to the governor’s office for the swearing-in ceremony.

In an interview, he said he was happy about being confirmed, adding that he apologized to the Senate for the delay as he needed to attend to some family matters abroad.

“I am ready to move on now. My priorities will be to improve programs for our inmates and correction officers, conduct more training sessions for the officers and hire additional officers,” he said.

Attao said the 7th Cycle Academy will be graduating 15 corrections officers soon and by October or November they will start another academy and be able to hire more officers.

He said they are also in the process of identifying programs that can work for inmates and officers.
