SENATOR Paul A. Manglona said he will propose a $42,025 annual starting salary for Public School System teachers and counselors.
In a letter to Board of Education Chairwoman MaryLou Ada, Manglona commended the BOE for approving a new salary scale for the “hardworking and devoted staff, instructors and counselors” of PSS.
“However,” he added, “it has been brought to my attention that the salary adjustments recently approved and implemented by the board are substantially different for administrative staff as compared to those for teachers and counselors.”
Manglona said he is “is not against the salaries adjusted for the administrative staff. I strongly believe that PSS, as a whole, has been long overdue for a new salary scale as each employee plays a critical role in laying the foundation for our youth. However, my concern is for highly qualified teachers and counselors who work directly with the students that went from a starting salary of $30,976 with 0-4years of experience to $33,289.35 as opposed to the lowest average starting salary of $42,025 in the United States that I advocated for in previous meetings held in the Senate.”
He said “in order to address this matter, I would like to know the financial impact of implementing a starting salary of $42,025 per annum for teachers and counselors within the commonwealth. Please provide my office a copy of PSS personnel listing of all teachers, counselors, principals, vice principals, and others showing their annual salaries. Our teachers and counselors remain devoted to our students despite their limited resources and have often used their own money to purchase items and educational materials to carry out the educational goals for their students. I cannot stress enough the importance of increasing the salaries of teachers and counselors to address the need to maintain a stable student to teacher ratio in our school system. At the end of the day, our actions will lead to enhancing the learning environment of our students,” Manglona said.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Angel Demapan earlier requested documents from PSS and the BOR regarding the recent salary increases.
Demapan said his committee has already received the requested documents and is now reviewing them.
“Some members still have concerns so there may be a need to hold further discussions with the BOE and PSS in a follow-up meeting,” he added.
