Sen. Hofschneider: CW bill to set guidelines for hiring US workers

SENATOR Jude U. Hofschneider said the CW bill introduced by U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski and U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan will set guidelines for the commonwealth as it moves forward in hiring more U.S. qualified workers.

“It’s important that we get our act together as far as more training for U.S. workers is concerned,” he said in an interview. “We will continue to make sure that U.S. workers or residents are prioritized for jobs. But, at the same time, as we transition to federalization, we must be also aware that a lot of the positions filled by U.S. workers are contingent on jobs in hospitality and other areas, including healthcare.”

Hofschneider commended CNMI Gov. Ralph Torres and Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo for signing a memorandum of agreement that will allow them to work collaboratively on issues that affect both jurisdictions.

“Although we have separate governments, we tend to have the same issues with respect to federal policies such as the CW program for the CNMI and the H2-B visa program for Guam. So this collaboration between the CNMI and Guam will allow us to be heard better in Washington, D.C.”
