Saipan municipal government to honor former mayor

THIS Friday, the Saipan mayor’s office and the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council will host a ceremony in honor of the late Mayor Jose Santos Rios.

Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said he has informed Rios’s family about the memorial event which will be held at the Saipan Leadership Memorial Courtyard in Chalan Kanoa starting at 10 a.m.

Apatang invites members of the community to join municipal officials as they pay tribute to the late mayor.

Rios was mayor from Jan. 8, 1982 to Jan. 7, 1986. He was the island’s third mayor since the NMI became a U.S. commonwealth.

He was born on Dec. 19, 1939 and died on Jan. 21, 2018.

Saipan Municipal Council administrator Frances Muna said Rios passed away one month and two days after celebrating his 78th birthday.

According to information relayed by family members to the municipal council, Rios was given a military funeral at the veteran’s cemetery in Washington state on Feb. 2, 2018.

Rios enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to South Korea during the Korean war.

Rios later joined the Peace Corps and was stationed in Chuuk.

He is survived by his wife Emilia and children Roy Rios, Marie Martinez, Remay McNally, and Joseph Rios Jr.
