Saipan mayor’s office starts test period for hanging flower baskets

THE Saipan mayor’s office started last week the “test and observation” phase for its flower-basket project, Mayor David M. Apatang said.

After a workshop on flower garden cultivation, landscaping and maintenance that was conducted recently, he said they hung five flower baskets from lamp posts on Beach Road.

Japanese horticulturists Jun-ichi Inada and Ito Takami, who conducted the workshop, said it will take 10 days before they can determine whether the plants are OK. If they’re not, the horticulturists said the mayor’s office can use other tropical flowers.

“This is only a test,” the mayor said, adding that once the plants are ready they will invite non-profit organizations, businesses and families to help maintain the hanging flower baskets.

There will be a memorandum of agreement on the responsibilities of the sponsors who agreed to take care of the plants, the mayor said.

According to Apatang, they will will be hanging 100 flower baskets on lamp posts along Beach Road.

The mayor’s office secured $90,000 from Marianas Visitors Authority for the project.
