Saipan mayor’s office, municipal council to prioritize house-numbering project

SAIPAN and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Luis John Castro said his office is “very supportive” of the mayor’s house-numbering project.

“We’ve been working with the mayor to get it off the ground,” he said, adding that the project is very important to the municipality.

“We want to implement it because in times of emergency, house numbers are crucial,” Castro said.

He said they may ask the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation to help fund the project.

“It’s not something that we can do overnight. Sometimes it’s more of a technical problem than a logistical one.”

But Castro said he is confident that the project will get the support of the delegation, the community and the business sector.

“The community needs this very badly,” he added.

For his part, Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres said he has spoken with Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang about the project. “We’re now trying to look for the needed financial sources.”

Once all the houses on Saipan are numbered, Torres said it will be easier for many companies to do business with residents, and for the government, especially law enforcement officers and first responders, to address emergency situations.

Torres said his administration appreciates the efforts of the mayor’s office and the municipal council to make the project a top prioritiy.

In a separate interview, special assistant to the Saipan mayor Henry Hofschneider said the project is in line with Saipan Local Law 11-3 which creates a directory commission composed of the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Public Works and the Department of Public Lands.

He said they will also ask the help of the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, and the Saipan Zoning Office which have data needed for the project.
