Saipan mayor says visiting Korean students’ involvement in community service impressive

SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang commended visiting Korean students for their spirit of volunteerism.

He said he has been “so impressed” with the students’ involvement in community service while they are on island.

On Tuesday afternoon, Apatang presented certificates of appreciation to 18 Korean students who participated in cleanup activities.

“I hope you enjoy your stay here, and I encourage you to help promote our island among your friends and family,” the mayor told the students.

The students joined the cleanup at Paupau Beach and Sugar Dock Beach last week, according to their English teacher Su Hyun Jo.

The students signed up for the MBC Global Camp with Sasamo USA Corp. to attend a one-month series of English classes on Saipan, Su Hyun Jo said.

The students are learning English at the Saipan Seventh-day Adventist School, Northern Marianas International School and Saipan International School.

While on island, the students are also visiting various tourists and historical sites, including Managaha. They will be leaving Saipan this week.

Like other groups of Korean students who also visited the mayor at his office, the 18 students presented a “Thank You” poster to Apatang.

Su Hyun Jo said the students learned many things about the responsibilities, programs and projects of the office of the mayor.
