ROTA Mayor Efraim Atalig will seek a second term to pursue his development plan for the island.

Tourism on Rota is picking up, he said, adding that he wants to continue the “momentum of this progress.”

“We will further improve our island and maintain a clean environment to attract more tourists and investments,” the mayor said.

Atalig, a Republican, said his likely opponent is Senate Vice President Steve Mesngon who won a Senate seat in 2014 on the Republican slate.

For Rota’s two Senate seats, the candidates include Lt. Gov. Victor Hocog, former Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board member Albert Taitano, Felix Santos and former Sen. Jovita Taimanao.

Asked if he has hired “many consultants,” Mayor Atalig said he had six.

The municipality needs consultants “because we don’t know everything,” he said, adding that his consultants are getting “only a little compensation.”

Atalig said the issue has cropped up because it’s “the political season, so I just have accept criticism while I continue to do what is right for the people.”
