GUAM-BASED Pacific Rim held a job fair on Saturday at the Garapan Fishing Base and expressed interest in hiring eight individuals. They will undergo physical examination and background check this week, and if they pass they will be assigned to the Imperial Pacific hotel construction project in Garapan.
The eight applicants are all U.S. citizens or residents.
According to Hana de Oro, Pacific Rim office manager, around 60 applicants, including nonresidents, registered during the job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and were interviewed by the project manager.
De Oro said they want to hire 800 to 1,000 on Saipan to complete the Imperial Pacific hotel project. They will hold another job fair on April 14.
“We are offering various positions from laborers, engineers, welders, helpers and administrative staff positions to anybody who is willing to work and are qualified. We will be assigning them to the hotel-resort project. Our focus is on local residents. That is our priority — the local workforce. We will be joining the CNMI Department of Labor in their job fair scheduled for April 14 and hopefully we can get as many applicants as we can.”
Pacific Rim has already hired 300 U.S. eligible workers from Guam, who are now working on the Imperial Pacific hotel project.
Pacific Rim said it is confident that it will finish the required 329 hotel rooms by August.
Former Department of Public Works employee David Santos was among those hired by Pacific Rim on Saturday.
He said he worked as a welder at DPW for 28 years. “I am happy that I got the job. This is a good opportunity for us locals and how I wish there were more local people like me that applied. I was here since 10 this morning but not too many locals showed up,” Santos said.
Susan Marchitti, who was applying for an administrative position, was the last applicant to fill out a form.
Pacific Rim provided raffle tickets to applicants, and it was Marchitti who won a 32-inch Hisense TV.
