In April, jury members found Omwere guilty of multiple counts of home invasion, kidnapping and rape, all with special allegations of use of a deadly weapon.

The victim testified during the trial, stating that she had fallen asleep on her couch one evening, and awoke to find Omwere tugging at her dress and brandishing a large hunting knife.

“The victim is lucky to be alive,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Heibel said at the sentencing hearing on Monday. “These are things no one should ever have to live through.”

The 28-year-old victim was present at the hearing, and watched while Supreme Court of Guam Judge Michael Bordallo read Omwere’s sentence.

During the trial, she recounted that the ordeal lasted until about 6 a.m. the following morning, and ended with Omwere forcing the victim to drop him off in Hagåtña.

“I thought I was going to die that night,” she told jurors.
