THE Northern Marianas Trades Institute has purchased three buses to better serve Public School System students who are taking courses at NMTI.
NMTI Chief Executive Officer Agnes McPhetres said the buses will pick up students of Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School and Kagman High School and bring them to the trade school.
“There are many programs that we cannot do in the high schools because there are some courses that need to be hands-on and require a shop so we need to bring the students to the trade school,” she added.
McPhetres said there are 300 high school students taking vocational and technical courses on Saipan.
“They are more focused if they are at NMTI because it is different compared to a high school,” she added.
In a report to the Board of Education, interim Education Commissioner Glenn Muna said the NMTI buses will only be used by students taking courses at the trade school.
But the Public School System will provide bus drivers for the NMTI buses. “We will not hire additional drivers but will utilize the existing PSS drivers,” Muna added.
He said they will meet with NMTI officials to further discuss the transportation services for students.
