NMI sees 1st traffic fatality in 2018

POLICE are investigating a hit-and-run that killed a 38-year-old man   at the intersection of Chalan Pale Arnold and As Mahetog on Sunday, April 1.

The Department of Public Safety said the victim, a Chinese, sustained several severe injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m.

Police believe that alcohol was a factor in the first traffic fatality of the year.

Jackie Rae, DPS public information officer, said the driver was located on Monday, April 2. She did not say if the driver was arrested.

On Sunday, April 1, at approximately 6:53 p.m., Rae said a female caller notified DPS dispatch of an auto-pedestrian collision at the intersection of Chalan Pale Arnold and As Mahetog.

Rae said the incident occurred near Saipan Ice & Water Company in the southbound shoulder of Chalan Pale Arnold.

When police officers and Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services medics arrived on the scene, they found an unconscious Asian male lying on the driveway of the water company.

Medics transported the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center’s emergency room at approximately 7:06 p.m., Rae said.

According to a witness, the suspect did not stop after hitting the victim, and continued driving southbound before making a left on Mihaville in Garapan.

The witness said the victim was struck by a green SUV. She was able to get its full license plate number, and provided a description of the driver, Rae said, adding that the vehicle was located seven hours later.

There were at least three traffic fatalities on Saipan last year.
