THE unemployment rate in the CNMI was 10.5 percent in the 4th quarter of 2017, according to the preliminary result of the survey conducted by the Department of Commerce-Central Statistics Division.
By island, the jobless rate was 10.8 percent on Saipan, 9 percent on Rota, and 6.8 percent on Tinian.
Department of Commerce Secretary Mark Rabauliman, in his report to the Legislature, said the Central Statistics Division team is still working on the final report which will be released soon.
The report measures the general population, potential labor force, labor force, employed, unemployed, the not-in-labor-force population, the unemployment rate and the labor force participation rate in the 4th quarter of 2017.
The potential labor force population consists of all persons 16 years old and older within the total population.
According to the preliminary report, the estimated potential labor force population was 37,419 at the time of the survey: 34,001 or 91 percent on Saipan; 1,874 or 5 percent on Tinian; and 1,544 or 4 percent on Rota.
At the time of the survey, the estimated CNMI labor force population was 22,339 or 91 percent on Saipan; 1,218 or 5 percent on Tinian; and 1,084 or 4 percent on Rota.
As for the unemployed population, Saipan had 2,465; Tinian, 83; and Rota, 98.
There were 12,314 persons in the CNMI who were not in the labor force: 11,197 were on Saipan; 656 on Tinian; and 461 on Rota.
The report also indicated that U.S. citizens and permanent resident comprised 71 percent or 37,249 of the CNMI population while 28 percent or 15,262 were non-U.S. citizens.
The unemployment rate for U.S. citizens and permanent resident was 12.5 percent while the unemployment rate for non-U.S. citizens was 8.2 percent.
