Nathan Roppul arrested for assaulting wife, again

Three days short of a year since being released from the Department of Corrections after he pled guilty to assaulting his then-pregnant wife, 28 year old Nathan Mario Aguon Roppul was, once again, arrested for assaulting her.

Roppul who choked, hit, and bit his wife served 90 days in prison last year.

In the recent incident, he was charged with domestic violence, disturbing the peace and assault and battery.

On February 16, 2018 at 10:28 pm police responded to an assault incident on Middle Road in Gualo Rai.

Roppul’s wife told police that she was assaulted by her husband who got mad because she called her mother to take care of their 8-month-old baby. She told police that she was preparing to go to work when she observed that Roppul was intoxicated and called her mother.

According to the victim, she told Roppul that he was drunk and could not take care of the baby, when he asked why she had called her mother.

The victim said that when they arrived at her mother’s residence and were about to get the baby, Roppul went to the back seat, took the baby and sat in the driver’s seat.

She said she tried to get the baby while the car door was still open, but Roppul allegedly kicked her three times in the stomach.

She also told police that Roppul slammed the car door twice against her back forcing her to hit the side of the vehicle twice, while she was between the open door and the vehicle.

The victim told police, Roppul then got out of the driver’s side and walked toward the main road with the baby. She said she followed and begged Roppul to give the baby back. The victim said the defendant turned and handed the baby to her and ran off in the direction of the main road.

The victim told police that she is scared of Roppul and scared for her life and her child’s.

She told police that this was not the first incident of domestic violence involving Roppul, and that currently he is still on probation and should not be consuming alcohol.

Roppul appeared in the courtroom of Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio on Tuesday afternoon for a bail hearing and she imposed a $10,000 cash bail on the defendant.

Assistant public defender Benjamin Hale appeared as Roppul’s defense counsel. Assistant Attorney general Frances Demapan appeared for the government.

He was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections and ordered to return on Feb. 27 at 1:30 pm for a preliminary hearing, and March 5 at 9am for arraignment.

Last year, Roppul was sentenced to one year in prison, all suspended except for ninety (90) days with credit for 51 days time served for assaulting his then-pregnant wife.

Roppul was released from DOC’s custody on February 19, 2017.

His sentence included one year of probation, and he was ordered to attend and complete Anger Management Counseling and alcohol Abuse Counseling at the Community Guidance Center before the end of his probationary period. Failure to comply with the terms and conditions of the plea agreement would subject him to further proceedings according to the judgment and commitment order.
