An opposition MP in Papua New Guinea, Sir Mekere Morauta, says a trip by the board and senior staff of the Bank of PNG to the Federated States of Micronesia for a meeting is an insult to the people of PNG.
The former prime minister, who is also a former governor of the central bank, said he cannot understand why the board could not meet in Port Moresby, to save money at a time when the government and country has severe cashflow problems and shortages of foreign exchange.
He said it was an insult to all the individuals and businesses owed money by the government to see the Bank of PNG wasting money in this manner.
Sir Mekere asked how the governor can justify not releasing foreign currencies to commercial banks for their customers when he was happy to waste foreign exchange on travel allowances and hotels in Micronesia.
