Local group to hold awareness program on spearfishing

THE Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club will hold a dive-flag awareness program on Saipan in April, club secretary Jun Yamagishi said.

The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council or Wespac, which will provide equipment, is one of the sponsors and supporters of the program, he added.

The program will inform participants about the proper use of spearfishing equipment as well as safety rules.

Yamagishi encourages spearfishing enthusiasts to take part in the program and avail themselves of a dive flag or buoy.

The program venue and date will be announced soon as organizers are still finalizing the event, he added.

Yamagishi emphasized the importance of dive-flag awareness to protect individuals from accidents while spearfishing and to remind boat captains to comply with safety regulations.

As a rule, he said, sea craft should avoid passing within a 30-meter radius when there’s a dive flag in the lagoon, and within a 100-meter radius when a dive flag is in the open ocean.

The Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club is headed by Morito Asai and has been active is supporting Wespac’s programs, particularly in gathering data about various fish species.
