LIGHTNING struck the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s Power Plant 1 at 9:02 Thursday morning, resulting in an islandwide outage.
In a statement, CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho said the lightning affected the primary overhead power distribution system associated with Feeders 2 and 3, causing the Feeder 3 breaker to explode. No injuries were reported.
As CUC continued to assess the situation, Camacho said they started restoring power to areas not directly affected, starting with Feeder 1 to prioritize the hospital, followed by the substation in Chalan Kiya, then Feeders 4 and 7, followed by the Kiya 1, Kiya 2, and Kiya 4 circuits.
Feeder 2, Feeder 3 and Kiya 3 remained offline until CUC’s power distribution team completed its assessment and gave clearance for restoration.
By 12:30 p.m., CUC said it had restored power to all areas except for Feeder 3 and portions of Feeder 2.
The areas affected were Hotel Street, portions of Garapan and south to the intersection of Chalan Monsignor Guerrero Road (the Atkins Kroll traffic intersection).
Camacho said restoration occurred as follows: Feeder 4 at 10:27 a.m.; Feeder 7 at 10:28 a.m.; Feeder 1 at 10:42 a.m.; Kiya 1 at 11:08 a.m.; Kiya 2 at 11:10 a.m.; Kiya 4 at 11:13 a.m.; and Kiya 3 at 11:17 a.m.
He said water service was affected in some areas, including Gualo Rai, Lower MIHA Housing, Upper Navy Hill and Hotel Street, Garapan.
Water service for San Roque and Tanapag was scheduled for interruption at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Water service was expected to be restored to normal by 6 a.m., Friday to allow CUC water tanks to refill to a sufficient level.
