Joseph Michael Diaz accepted to Stanford University

JOSEPH Michael Diaz has been accepted to Stanford University. He was among the 2,040 students who received acceptance letters from the prestigious institution.

Stanford University received more than 47,000 applicants nationwide.

Diaz, 17, is a senior student at Oak Ridge High School.  He is the son of Anthony Pangelinan Diaz and Jennibeth W. Diaz.

Anthony Diaz’s parents are Bernice Pangelinan Diaz, who resides in As Lito, Saipan, and the late Ramon Deleon Guerrero Diaz.

“We are extremely proud of Joseph’s accomplishment,” Anthony Diaz said, adding that his son will be attending Stanford in the fall of 2018.

“We have always been proud of our Chamorro heritage, so when we found out he was accepted, the first thing I did was to tell my mom, Joseph’s grandmother. I know how much it means for Saipan and the entire CNMI for a Chamorro to be admitted to a prestigious school like Stanford,” he said.

He said his son works hard in school and is an active member of the community.

In high school, Joseph Diaz has taken 10 Advanced Placement courses and managed to maintain a GPA of 4.2.  He is also a gifted trombone player, his father said.

Joseph Diaz has participated in prestigious national bands, including the California All-State for six years, the Honor Band-Music For All National Festival, and the-Rose Parade National Honor Band.

“In the community, Joseph is very involved in church where he volunteers countless hours with children and youth groups,” Anthony Diaz said.

For the past four years, every spring break, Joseph Diaz goes to Mexico to help build houses for families in need.

Like any typical teenager, he is also active on social media. He has an Instagram account with over 10,000 followers.
