Ivan Quichocho is 2017 Business Person of the Year

THE Saipan Chamber of Commerce 2017 Business Person of the Year is Ivan Quichocho, vice president for business development at Tan Holdings Corporation.

The other nominees were Velma Palacios of IT&E, Yoshihito Shibahata of the Pacific Islands Club and Tyrell Pauling of the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Quichocho, 47, said the award “is an absolute honor for me — all those other nominees and the past winners are dynamic leaders of the community. I was really blown away to be nominated. And now to be actually receiving this recognition — it’s overwhelming.”

Asked what it takes to be nominated for the award, Quichocho said:

“I guess just work hard while staying humble especially when working with potential and actual vendors, partners and customers. Always try to do better and always think ‘win-win.’ I mentioned in my speech earlier that we are in this kind of situation now where contracting human resources is challenging. So what we need is to work together and collaborate. We have to collaborate with our government and private sector and come on strong when it comes to promoting our islands. We also have to acknowledge that the competition globally is out there and growing. They are coming up with newer things and they have more resources so it’s hard to compete with Asian countries like the Philippines, South Korea or Vietnam. They are coming on strong and are very aggressive in, for example, destination promotion. And they are not suffering from the labor situation we are facing right now. They are also friendly destinations and a lot of their infrastructure is new. We are not a new destination and have facilities that need new investments. We all need to collaborate and see if we can rectify those issues. The reality is we have to work together and fast just to maintain our current position. It is going to be tough in 2018 so we will just have to focus on becoming a better island destination.”

Quichocho thanked his colleagues and his team for all their hard work, adding that a lot of things would not have been possible without them and their support.

The announcement of the Business Person of the Year was held in Hibiscus Hall at the Fiesta Resort on Saturday night.

Another highlight of the event was the installation of the new board of directors of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce.

Velma Palacios and Ron Smith of Angil Design will remain president and vice president.

The secretary is Kevin McCale of Docomo Pacific while the treasurer is Michael Johnson of Deloitte & Touche.

The board members are Alex Sablan of Tan Holdings, Perry Inos Jr. of Triple J, Tyrell Pauling of the Hyatt Regency Saipan, Donna Krum of Friends First Marketing and Alex K. Youn of AC Pacific.
