Guam to help CUC install concrete power poles

COMMONWEALTH Utilities Corp. Executive Director Gary Camacho said the Guam Power Authority will help install concrete power poles on Saipan.

He said CUC has a memorandum of agreement with GPA regarding manpower support whenever there’s an immediate need, especially following a calamity.

By August this year, Camacho said CUC must install 787 concrete power poles, otherwise the Federal Emergency Management Administration will take back the funding for the project.

At a recent meeting, Camacho updated the CUC board about the ongoing replacement of wooden power poles with concrete ones as part of the hazard-mitigation project after Saipan was hit by Typhoon Soudelor in Aug. 2015, damaging 849 power poles.

In Nov. 2015, he said they installed 222 45-foot power poles, while in Sept. 2015, they installed 51 55-foot power poles.

From April 2017 to June 22, 2018, CUC plans to install 140 45-foot concrete poles, 52 of which will be concrete. As of January, they had completed 37 percent of the power-pole-replacement project, Camacho said.

From March 26, 2018 to April 19, 2018 CUC is supposed to install 103 35-foot concrete poles, and from April 20, 2018 to Aug. 22, 2018, they must install 271 40-foot concrete poles, he added.

“We need to meet the deadline; if not, CUC will shoulder the cost for the pole-replacement project,” Camacho said.

The project includes Rota and Tinian, he added.
