Governor invites Senator Murkowski to visit NMI

(Office of the Governor) — Last week, Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres sent a letter to U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, inviting her and the members of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to visit the Northern Mariana Islands for an in-depth experience of the CNMI’s economic resurgence and its goal of retaining its economic viability.

This invitation comes on the heels of the recent Senate committee hearing on S. 2325, the Northern Mariana Islands U.S. Workforce Act. Since the hearing, Governor Torres has reached out to members of both the House and the Senate and has remained in discussions with them as the legislation moves through Congress.

The last time a congressional delegation visited the CNMI was in February 2017 by the House Committee on Natural Resources, led by Chairman Rob Bishop of Utah.

Here is the text of the governor’s letter:

Dear Senator Murkowski:

Throughout my time as governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, you have generously provided your time and consideration of our unique and often times complex issues. As I informed your committee during the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on February 6, 2018, the extension of the CNMI’s transition period is of great importance to our islands’ ability to retain a viable economy. I understand and appreciate the concerns shared during my appearances before your Committee and have done my best to provide the context and information necessary to paint the accurate picture of our circumstances here.

In effort to provide you with greater information regarding our needs and our efforts, I would like to officially invite you and members of your Committee to visit the Northern Mariana Islands to see first-hand the economy we are trying to build and the challenges we are facing toward even greater levels of progress.

As the Senator of the great state of Alaska, you are well aware of the difference that can be made by viewing the unique circumstances within our nation’s diverse landscape. Experiencing the foundation from where we in the CNMI are building upon with regard to labor acquisition, economic growth, and regulation will surely provide important context to these critical discussions.

I and my administration stand ready to be of support if a Congressionally authorized trip is a possibility and look forward to one day welcoming you to the Northern Mariana Islands.
