Former mayor’s name removed from Sugar King Park wall, again

THE name of the late Mayor Juan B. Tudela painted on the Sugar King Park wall has been removed again.

In 2014, his name was also removed from the wall but Ramon B. Camacho, as acting mayor, put it back.

As Saipan mayor from 2002 to 2010, Tudela initiated the development of the park. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 77.

On Tuesday, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said “whoever did this [removing Tudela’s name]  should be penalized for destroying government property.”

He said he never ordered his field personnel to remove Tudela’s name from the wall of the park.

“That’s unprofessional. Somebody must be joking here. It’s election time,” the mayor said.

Apatang said his office plans to re-design the wall and “make it better.” Tudela’s name will be painted on the wall again, he added.
