AT 10 a.m., Thursday, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. informed the general public that there was an islandwide outage.
According to CUC:
“At 9:02 a.m. there was a lightning strike immediately at the Power Plant 1 facility, affecting Feeder 2 and Feeder 3 primary overhead power distribution system which caused Feeder 3 breaker to explode affecting the power supply resulting in an island-wide power outage. No injuries occurred during this incident.
“Assessments continue at this time, however, CUC will start to restore power to areas not affected starting with Feeder 1 to prioritize the hospital followed by the substation in Chalan Kiya, then Feeder 4, Feeder 7 followed by Kiya 1, Kiya 2, and Kiya 4 circuits.
“Feeder 2, Feeder 3 and Kiya 3 will remain offline until Power Distribution has completed its assessment and has given clearance for restoration.“Updates will follow as soon as they are available. CUC appreciates your understanding and patience as it prioritizes power restoration to the entire island.

Mount Carmel School dismissed its students at 11 a.m. while the Public School System said it will be “releasing students at 11:30 a.m.”
