AFTER 29 years of providing a Narita, Japan-Saipan flight service, Delta Air Lines’ final flight from the island left at around 4:45 p.m., Sunday.
Commonwealth Ports Authority Executive Director Chris Tenorio, in an interview, said they held a thank-you ceremony for Delta with the CPA fire personnel performing a water salute for the Narita-bound aircraft.
“It was a bitter-sweet moment and we hope they would come back again in the near future and fly again to Saipan. For now, we want to thank them for their service and we wish them well,” Tenorio said.
Delta said it was terminating its Narita-Saipan and Japan-Palau flights starting on May 6 “due to unsustainable pressure, including lower demand, in the Micronesia market.”
Delta said it will continue to operate flights from Japan to the U.S. and Asia.
