Defendants in sexual-abuse-of-a-minor case appear in court

THE two men accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in two separate incidents appeared in Superior Court on Wednesday.

Search Osilek Jr., 19, and Jeffry Manarang Fernandez, 35, are charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree.

At a preliminary hearing, Judge Kenneth L. Govendo found probable cause to charge Osilek. He will be arraigned on Feb. 5, 2018 at 9 a.m.

Assistant Public Defender Nancy Dominski represented Osilek while Assistant Attorney General Teri Tenorio appeared for the government.

Osilek, through his lawyer, asked the court for a bail-modification hearing.

Fernandez appeared before Judge Joseph N. Camacho for a bail-modification hearing and was represented by Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig. Assistant Attorney General Robert C. Lee appeared for the government.

Judge Camacho denied Fernandez’s bail-modification request and third-party custodian after agreeing with the prosecutor who noted that the victim lives within same premises where the defendant will be staying.

The prosecutor also informed the court that the victim’s mother and grandmother will be charged with obstruction, interference with a domestic-violence report and child abuse involving the same victim.

Variety learned that the victim’s mother and grandmother have been arrested and will be brought to the court today, Thursday, for a bail hearing.

Fernandez will return to court today, Thursday, for a preliminary hearing at 10:30 a.m.

Both defendants were remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Also on Wednesday, Judge Camacho approved a bail-modification request and third-party custodian for Edwin Bryan Mendoza Jr. who was charged with domestic violence: assault and battery, disturbing the peace and criminal mischief.

Mendoza was represented by Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig while Assistant Attorney General Robert C. Lee appeared for the government.

Judge Camacho in his order approved Mendoza’s mother to be the third-party custodian and allowed him to go back to work.

Mendoza was arrested for slapping his girlfriend whom he accused of having an affair with a friend.
