CUC to hire PIO, administration chief

THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. will soon be hiring a public information officer — a position that the previous CUC board abolished in Jan. 2016 — and an administration chief which is a new post.

At a recent meeting, the new CUC board headed by acting chairman Weston Thomas Deleon Guerrero approved the two positions.

Since Jan. 2016, CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho has assumed the PIO’s responsibilities.

CUC human resources manager Andrew Orsini said, based on the salary scale indicated in the Fox Lawson compensation study for CUC, the PIO position was to have a starting salary of $42,000 annually to a maximum of $72,000 annually while the salary of the administration chief was to be $48,000 annually to a maximum of $92,000 annually.

The board approved the following salary rates: for the PIO, from $45,000 to $80,000 annually; and for the administrative chief., from $40,000 to $70,000 annually.

Camacho said the salary for the PIO would be based on the chosen applicant’s experience and educational attainment.

He noted the “overwhelming” number of CUC projects, including those on Rota and Tinian, and the need to disseminate information to the community on a regular basis.

“News is important and must be properly disseminated to the community,” he said. “It is also important to let people know about the good things we do.”

In addition, schedules of power outages, system repairs and water disruption must be shared with the public, Camacho said.

In Nov. 2016, CUC’s previous PIO, Brad Ruszala, and former chief financial officer Matthew Yaquinto sued the then-CUC board for violating the Open Government Act, the Government Ethics Code and the terms of the federal stipulated orders.
