THE five-man team sent by the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to help the power restoration effort in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico is back on Saipan after completing a 90-day mission that started on Jan. 17, 2018.
Last week, CUC management led by Executive Director Gary Camacho hosted a party at the Civic Center in Susupe for the team members: CUC power division support logistic liaison Joe Crisostomo, foreman lineman Fred Lizama, lead man Ray Quitano, trades and line technicians Jose Joseph Lizama and Kevin Hidalgo.
They also received a certification of recognition for their commitment and dedication.
“We received lots of positive feedback from residents, officials and business owners in Puerto Rico regarding the performance of our team,” Camacho said.
In Puerto Rico, Camacho also met with utility officials and discussed utility issues that territories such as the CNMI and Puerto Rico face.
Camacho said he told them about how Saipan was devastated by Typhoon Soudelor in Aug. 2015 and the challenges the CNMI faced because resources and assistance from the U.S. mainland were not readily available.
“They asked for advice and we also shared our thoughts and experiences,” Camacho added.
He said he encouraged Puerto Rico Power Authority officials to sign a memorandum of agreement with other utility companies regarding assistance following a calamity.
CUC, he added, is signing agreements with power companies in San Antonio, Texas and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. CUC is also a member of the American Public Power Association and the Pacific Power Association, he said.
Camacho lauded CUC power division acting manager Lee Lieto for administering the power transmission and distribution program effectively despite the deployment of five employees to Puerto Rico.
