AN incoming board member of the CNMI Scholarship Office is an Army Reservist, a legislative staffer and an educator.
Charlene Sakisat Masiwemai, who has been with the Army Reserve for five years, was nominated by Gov. Ralph Torres. Her appointment requires Senate consent.
On Wednesday, the Senate conducted a public hearing on her appointment and those who testified expressed support for her confirmation.
These included legislative fiscal analyst David Demapan, senior legislative assistant Claire Sablan, legislative assistant Cameron San Nicolas, Scholarship Office Administrator Rose Pangelinan, scholarship board chair Geri Dela Cruz, Rep. Angel Demapan, Rep. BJ Attao, husband Richard Masiwemai, who is a teacher at Kagman High School, and brothers Fermin Sakisat and Melvin Sakisat.
They said Charlene Masiwemai is the right person for the job, adding that she is very qualified.
They noted her strong passion for education as well as her humility, efficiency and dedication.
A legislative assistant, she will be leaving the Legislature soon to teach at Northern Marianas College.
Legislative staffers said they were sad about losing a good colleague but happy and proud of her for they know she will serve NMC and the scholarship board well.
In an interview, Charlene Masiwemai said she was humbled by the support from her colleagues and lawmakers, adding that she will do her best to help the CNMI Scholarship Office perform its duties.
“Team effort and support for our programs, including the timely release of scholarship checks, will be my focus,” she said.
She received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from the University of Guam.
Also on Wednesday, the Senate conducted a public hearing on Patricia S. Mareham who was appointed to the board of the Commonwealth Election Commission.
Mareham works at the Women’s Affairs Office and will represent Carolinians and the Third Senatorial District on the election board. If confirmed, she will serve until Aug. 8, 2021.
