18-year-old detainee charged with ‘ice’ possession

POLICE are charging an 18-year-old woman with possession of “ice” while detained in jail.

Shaina Deleon Guerrero Castro was found to be in possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Corrections officers found the “ice” in her possession after two other female detainees informed the officers that Castro had a Ziploc bag containing “ice” in her sports bra.

Corrections officers searched Castro’s jail cell and found the bag containing a white powdery substance in a pillow issued to the defendant.

The substance, weighing 0.8 of a gram, tested positive for narcotics, police said.

Castro told police that when she was arrested on Feb 3, the officers did not indicate what the charges were. At that time, she said she was already in possession of “ice.” Court documents did not state why Castro was arrested on Feb. 3.

According to Castro, she placed the Ziploc bag containing the ice in her sports bra before a pat-down search was conducted on her after she was arrested.

On Tuesday, Castro appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho who imposed a $20,000 cash bail.

Assistant Attorney General Robert C. Lee appeared for the government. The court said it will appoint a counsel to represent Castro who was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after the hearing.

Castro was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 12 and on Feb. 26 for arraignment.
