15 students to represent NMI in national speech, debate competition

OF 150 public and private school students who competed locally, 15 were selected to represent the CNMI in the National Speech and Debate Association event on June 17-22 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Harold Easton, Western Pacific-Asia Region president, said after the qualifying round, 80 to 90 students were left to compete from March 14 to 17.

Some of the students had gone through as many as three to five rounds in the competition, he added.

After announcing the top five in the 14 categories, regional coordinator Andrew Golden revealed the names of the students who made it to the trip list or those who will represent the CNMI in the national competition.

“There are a number of students on this team who have been national champions at the junior level,” Easton said. “We have a pretty solid team.”

He said they will ask the Public School System to help fund the CNMI team’s trip to Florida.
