TYPHOON Yutu destroyed 779 homes on Saipan, 183 on Tinian and 50 on Rota, according to an aerial damage assessment by the Federal Emergency Management and the CNMI Emergency Operations Center.
The damage assessment report was presented to the CNMI Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster or VOAD on Monday afternoon.
“This prompted us to discuss the initial needs of both our local nonprofits and the clients we are serving,” CNMI VOAD acting chair Maxine Lazlo said.
“These initial needs were relayed to the national VOAD — a network of all nonprofits that respond to disaster based in the United States — on a call Tuesday morning,” she added.
“We appreciate the handful of national VOAD members that are currently here or making their way to island to assist our CNMI and federal government partners. Our hope is that after this call, we are able to assist more national VOAD partners from off-island to assist with critical needs on Tinian, Saipan, and Rota.”
Laszlo said the primary needs in the villages and remote locations include food, water, shelter and transportation of critical goods.
