Trash piles up in Garapan area

HOUSEHOLD trash mixed with typhoon debris continues to pile up in the Garapan tourist district.

A concerned resident, who declined to be identified, complained about the trash dumped in an area near Fiesta Resort housing on Plumeria Avenue across from Kinpachi.

“The trash has been sitting there more than a month since Typhoon Yutu, and it seems that some people are still dumping trash  — the trash now occupies the whole area and has reached the side of the road,” the resident said.

The resident added that they were informed that the mayor’s office will not pick up household trash mixed with typhoon debris.

“So who will be responsible for this more than a thousand pounds of trash?”

The resident said the trash is affecting tourists.

Asked for comment, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said his office has to comply with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s policy which is to pick up  typhoon debris in the villages.

“That’s trash in a commercial area — the businesses there should remove it,” he said.
