A 22-year-old Japanese tourist drowned in the waters off Bird Island on New Year’s Day.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services identified the victim as Akiyama Eiki.
Derek Gersonde, DFEMS public information officer, said that on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, at 1:21 p.m., they received a call from the Department of Public Safety reporting a distressed swimmer at Bird Island in Marpi.
Medic 2 and Engine 2 from the Garapan fire station and Rescue 1 from the Susupe fire station arrived at the scene at around 1:35 p.m.
The medics proceeded on foot following the trail down to Bird Island where the victim was located. They saw that cardio-pulmonary resuscitation was already in progress and was being performed by a bystander.
According to the bystander, the patient had been unconscious under water for about 5 minutes.
As soon as the bystander got the patient out and onto the shore, the bystander performed CPR until the medics arrived.
Gersonde said the patient was placed onto a spine board and carried up the trail. The patient was then loaded into the medics’ vehicle and transported to the Commonwealth Health Center’s Emergency Room, arriving there at 2:45 p.m.
The patient was pronounced deceased by Dr. Villalon at 2:55 p.m., Gersonde said.
No other information was provided by DFEMS.
In 2018, there were six reported drowning incidents on Saipan.
