Tina Sablan vows to make Precinct 2 people proud of their village

PRECINCT 2 House candidate Tina Sablan, who was leading in the unofficial and partial election results, on Wednesday vowed to make her constituents proud of their village.

Sablan, a former one-term House member who currently works as communications specialist for U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, topped the Precinct 2 election based on the partial election results that did not include absentee ballots.

As of Wednesday morning, Sablan garnered 588 votes. Her two Republican opponents are also top legislative officials: Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation Chairman John Paul P. Sablan, who received 510 votes,  and Speaker Ralph S. Demapan with 488 votes.

Precinct 2 has two House seats.

Aside from typhoon recovery, which she would make a priority, Sablan said if elected, she would also focus on the revitalization of Chalan Kanoa.

During an interview on Wednesday, Sablan said she was still processing in her mind that she was leading in the unofficial and partial results.

Reflecting on her campaign and how it all started, Sablan said when she first began to consider running in Precinct 2, she had to reach out to friends and family, and even some people who also wanted to run in the same precinct.

She said she was reminded by some of her friends and supporters that Precinct 2, over the years, had been a stronghold of incumbent members.

She said she knew that it would be very difficult for an independent candidate like her to “get in.”

“So I would have to work really really hard. And that was how my campaign started — with an understanding that I had to reach across the aisle and had to reach out to families all around the precinct. I had to really work hard to earn the trust and confidence of the people in this precinct,” said Sablan, who won a Precinct 1 House seat in 2007.

“I’m just so grateful and so humbled to see the results. I really appreciate all the support I received throughout this campaign,” she added.

“I want the people of Precinct 2 to know that I will continue to work hard for them and to represent them and make them proud. I will work with the people of this community to make this precinct a better place for all of us to live, a place that we can be proud of.”
