Special election to fill vacant House seat

THERE will be a special election after 30 days to fill the seat vacated by the late Rep. Frank S. Dela Cruz, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said on Thursday.

On Jan. 14, Inauguration Day, the governor said the Precinct 3 House seat will be officially declared vacant.

“I and the attorney general will certify that a vacancy exists, and we will coordinate with the election commission regarding the special election,� Torres said.

He said he is grateful for the privilege to work with Dela Cruz in the 16th House of Representatives.

He said Dela Cruz was a man who truly acted for his people.

“I would like to extend my condolences to his family, to his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a person who really spoke his heart when he made passionate statements about the issues. He was a dedicated public servant to his people,� the governor said.

Also on Thursday, the Senate and the House of Representatives adopted commemorative resolutions   in honor of Dela Cruz’s contributions to the CNMI and its people.

Dela Cruz passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, on Tinian at the age of 56.

He  served in the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th Legislatures. He was an unsuccessful House candidate for the 19th Legislature, but he was elected to the 20th and won another term last November.

He will be laid to rest on Jan. 19.
