PUBLIC schools on Tinian will reopen on Monday, Nov. 26, while those on Saipan may reopen on Dec. 3, interim Education Commissioner Glenn Muna said.
He said the goal is to complete the school-year in the middle of June 2019. “This is to ensure that our seniors graduate and can prepare to transition to life after high school.”
He added, “We also want our students and faculty to have time in the summer to reset and recuperate in preparation for the coming school year.”
When classes resume, Muna said, schools and programs on Saipan and Tinian will run on conditional operations.
“All schools will only run for half day. Some schools will run on a double-session framework. Double session means that four hours of instructional time will be allotted for each morning and afternoon session.”
The Board of Education has suspended the policy on the required instructional minutes per day to allow double sessions.
In a recent board meeting, Muna identified the schools that will have double sessions: William S. Reyes Elementary School, Oleai Elementary School, Koblerville Elementary School, Francisco M. Sablan Middle School, San Vicente Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, and Tanapag Middle School.
He said half of the student population will go to school in the morning and the other half will go to school in the afternoon.
In the case of Hopwood Middle School, its students will attend classes at Marianas High School in the morning. Classes for the MHS students will be held in the afternoon.
Da’ok Academy students will attend classes at Tanapag Middle School.
“My promise to you is that as soon as we have new structures in place and have the capacity to return to regular full-day sessions, we will do so immediately,” Muna said, assuring parents that PSS has enough transportation for students.
