NMC students to return to As Terlaje campus next month

NORTHERN Marianas College students will return to their As Terlaje campus on Feb. 11, Interim NMC President Frankie Eliptico said.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has started building temporary classrooms at NMC, he added.

Currently, NMC classes are being held at Saipan Southern High School.

Eliptico said the Army Corps is building 24 classrooms for NMC. “We are also bringing some of our old buildings back on line. We will have about 30 classrooms available when our students come back.

He added, “We are looking forward to bringing them back to campus. It has been three to four months now since the typhoon devastated NMC. We want to bring them home.

Eliptico said the college will soon have typhoon-resilient structures.

“That’s our priority so that we won’t go through this devastation ever again, he added.

He said they are now looking for funding sources for the construction of new facilities on campus. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, he added, will reimburse NMC for the damage  inflicted by Typhoon Yutu.

“We are applying for grants from other sources and a possible loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We will be approaching the Legislature to help us secure the loan, Eliptico said.
