Navy officer tackled robber, recovered woman's purse | Guam – The Guam Daily Post

Editor’s note: In the final days of 2018, The Guam Daily Post will share snapshots of local heroes who made a difference in our community this year.

Near the end of his family’s trip around the island to see Christmas lights, Anthony “Tony” Mugavero found himself in the right place at the right time to help a stranger in need.

Mugavero ended quality time with his wife, daughter and infant son two days before Christmas Day 2017 at the Micronesia Mall. On their way out to their car, Mugavero, a Navy master-at-arms 1st class, heard a woman yell, “He took my purse!”

Mugavero, who works with Naval Base Guam’s security force, sprung into action. He kicked off his slippers and sprinted to catch the robber. Mall surveillance footage showed Mugavero jumping over a concrete wall, tackling the suspect and the two landing in the bushes, wrestling for a few seconds before the thief ran off.

The ordinary hero recovered the woman’s purse from a bush and returned it to a grateful Cindy Manibusan. Her husband, Assistant Fire Chief Joey Manibusan, called Mugavero “an example to our community – on-and-off base.”

The Navy sailor said he was just glad he was able to lend a helping hand.

“In today’s society, there are just not enough people doing enough nice things for people,” Mugavero said. “That’s the way I was brought up.”
