A MAN drowned while spearfishing in the waters off the beach near the 13 Fisherman Memorial in Garapan on Monday evening, the Department of Public Safety said.
A local fisherman told DPS boating safety officers that he and the 49-year-old victim from Susupe were spearfishing when, unknown to the fisherman, the victim “began cramping.”
DPS public information officer Jackie Rae said police received a call about the drowning incident at 8:20 p.m., Monday.
Boating safety officers arrived at the scene at 8:25 p.m., Rae said.
“As officers began to search the area, they observed a light from a fisherman’s flashlight,” she said.
A short distance from the light, she added, the victim was found lying down on the rocks on the shoreline.
She said medics arrived at 8:29 p.m. and administered CPR on the victim who was then transported to the Commonwealth Health Center.
Rae said the victim was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m.
DPS did not provide additional information regarding the victim’s identity.
