Male advocates needed to end violence against women – Brinkwire

Pacific islanders are discussing how men can advocate for an end to violence against women.

Representatives from several Pacific island agencies working to stop gender based violence are meeting in Fiji this week.

Pacific Women’s Network chair Shamima Ali said the role of men in ending violence against women was being highlighted at the gathering.

“Topic that we will be discussing is male advocacy, men’s role in doing the work. We’re looking at legislation around the Pacific, government accountability.”

The meeting will also hear experiences, discuss new approaches, build solidarity and map a way forward, Ms Ali said.

Countries taking part in the gathering include the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.
