The consulate said Sumitomo has been working for the consular office  on Saipan for over 28 years since March 15, 1975.

“She made many contributions, particularly assisting Japanese residents and tourists who unfortunately suffered from various accidents,” the consulate said.

Sumitomo received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays — the first Japanese resident in the CNMI who was awarded the decoration.

The consulate said Sumitomo was accompanied by her husband, Junichi Sumitomo, during the conferment of the decoration by Minister of Foreign Affairs Taro Kono in Tokyo, Japan on Nov. 8.

On May 29, 2014, Kazuko Sumitomo received the consul-general’s commendation for her contributions in promoting mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the CNMI.
